Normal Map on Low Res Model

This screen demonstrates the normal map applied to my low res model. The High res model used for the normal mapping is on the right while the the original model is on the left.

Here is the exported normal map, made by using image transer in unity and baking it to a blinn texture file.

Bear Texture

Below is a worked version of my low res bears' texture. I have a tiled background of fur with an applied cut-out filter to adhere to the simple "cartoony" aesthetic.I still plan to ad some more detail around the hands, face and feet.

Rig & Joints sceenshot

This is progressed version of my rig with all the joints labbled. There are some small issues with a few of the feet joints and some issues when imported into unity, but at the moment it is capable of performing the desired animations.

Rig (work in progress)

This a screen shot showing the work on my character rig. This is a sample set out of bones before parenting the joints together. For the animation the rig will only need for the limbs, head, hands and torso to be operational. I have added joints for the nose, brow and ears as well.

Animatic Test Scene

Below is a test I did capturing video footage through unity. The camera is stationary and a simple scipt allows the bear to move across when the foward key is pressed.

Low Res. Bear UV's

Here is the UV snapshot of my low resolution bear model, I managed to untangle the uv shells and arrange them into some form of order (head, torso, legs, arms) though complicated the UV when trying to sew uv edges and vertices, so I reverted back to this layout. I am currently painting the .psd

Assets In Unity Game Engine

Here is a screenshot of my character and set peice models placed inside the unity scene. These assets are in their basics forms for the purpose of creating an animatic for this semeters assessment. I have set basic lighting and am preparing the camera and shots at this stage. Most models have simple shaders, with a rough texture applied to the ground plane and a simple skybox for the background.

Dead Tree & Beehive Models

I desined the models, smoothed them slightly and grouped them together. Simple shaders have been applied for the sake of my animatic, though will update with textures at a later date.

Hi Res Bear Model

Here is a higher resolution of my bear model that I will use for normal mapping

Tree Model

Here is a basic model that I will duplicate and use to fill my scene

Animation Story Boards

These are some sample storyboards I drew up earlier on in the year with ideas on the camera shots I want to use in my scene.

Influence and Visual Aesthetic

The style and appearance of my project is intended have a particular “Sunday-morning-cartoon” feel about it. The Scene and Character Models are to look reduced with an emphasis on certain striking features such as; exaggerating the size of eyes, nose, hands and feet, etc. The mood is to be quite light-hearted, up-beat and accessible with a vivid colour palette of bright colours, soft shading.

Examples:

Mio Mao – (Claymation cartoon series, highly stylised cut edges to characters and scenery)

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts - (bevelled and blocky edges, strong bear resembleance and structure, bold features.)

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker -(Cartoon aesthetic, visually appealing, bright colour pallete and soft shading teqhniques.)

Project Proposal

“The Bear and the Beehive” (Working Title)
by Shaun Buzza

Synopsis
A little bear is desperate to snack on some honey upon noticing a beehive up in the treetops, but gets more than he bargains for...

Treatment
Whilst strolling through the forest past trees, bees and flowers, a young bear notices a large honey filled beehive situated high up in a dead tree. Thinking he might help himself to a delicious snack, the bear attempts to knock the hive by bashing the tree and shaking it, slightly stirring the bees. Without much success the bear looks around on the ground and finds a rock. He picks it up, aims it high and hurls it at the beehive. The hive stirs a little and moves from side-to-side but fails to fall from the branches. Determined to get the hive down, the bear makes one last desperate attempt and begins climbing the tree itself. As he gets closer towards the hive the bear tires and stretches out his hand. He slightly bumps the beehive from underneath, the hive rocks and falls ontop of the bears’ head. The bear falls and hits the ground with a great impact, the hive follows and hits the bear again on the head. The bees have finally had enough and swarm from the hive and chase the bear around the forest.
